Extra Space Storage is a real estate investment trust. Co. owns, operates, manages, acquires, develops and redevelops self-storage facilities. Co. has three segments: property management, acquisition and development, which includes managing, acquiring, developing and selling self-storage facilities; rental operations, which includes rental operations of self-storage facilities; and tenant reinsurance, which includes the reinsurance of risks relating to the loss of goods stored by tenants in Co.'s self storage facilities. As of Dec 31 2011, Co. had direct and indirect equity interests in 697 storage facilities. Co. also managed 185 properties for franchisees or third parties.
