Norfolk Southern is primarily engaged in the rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods in the Southeast, East, and Midwest and, via interchange with rail carriers, to and from the rest of the U.S. Co. also transports overseas freight through several Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. Co. provides logistics services and intermodal network in the eastern half of the U.S. Co.'s system reaches several individual industries, electric generating facilities, mines, distribution centers, transload facilities, and other businesses located in its service area. At Dec 31 2012, Co.'s railroads operated in 22 states and the District of Columbia.
